Assessment
Students will be given the option to take formal assessments at home with parental supervision. Such as spelling test, comprehension assessment, and fluency assessments. 🍎In this class, we will dig into the content and instructional practice that students would receive within a brick and mortar classroom for their literacy block. Our instructional focus will support learners who are working on a first grade level or students needing standards based support for a first grade student. We will work on the skills, content, and standards students will need to master during their first grade academic semesters 1 and 2.

For our phonics instructional focus, we will be supplementing the Saxon Phonics framework with phonics rules, sounds, and systematic approach. We will focus on a specific phonics skill each class. Have optional spelling and sight words for reinforcement and practice at home. Our phonics skills will be implemented into a fluency passage for context reading during class and at home.

Our reading strategies will include a standards based approach to support comprehension for first grade learners. We will include high interest read alouds and text experts, modeling, active student participation with discussion and vocabulary chants, foldables and graphic organizers to extend learning, and assessment pieces to check comprehension mastery and independent levels.

Each class will follow a general pattern for phonics, comprehension, and fluency practice. We will be able to build on skills throughout the week, but each class will have a stand alone focus.

Students are able to come an go within the semester as long as their is an opening for enrollment. Resources for the week will be sent out a week in advanced to be printed for class. (comprehension passages, graphic organizers, handwriting pages, class support resources)

🍎Refund Policy:
I am happy to give a $9 partial credit back for enrolling after a class meeting in the week for each day your learner did not attend class, upon request. A $3 credit will be kept for classroom materials and the recordings. You will receive all classroom materials for the week and recordings once we meet to verify learners. If you have any questions about this, please send me a personal message through Outschool.

I’m a compassionate and charismatic teacher who loves to teach! I have taught Kindergarten through 5th grade students for the last 14 years. In that time, I have been a general education teacher in the public schools setting for 10 years. I specialized as a reading coach, to my school, for two of those years. I have been teaching online since February 2020. I’m certified to teach Elementary education from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I absolutely love teaching First Grade. I taught First Grade for 8 years, in the public school setting, and 4 years on Outschool. It is one of my favorite grades to teach. One of the largest academic transformations occurs in First Grade. I have taught these lessons in the public school setting with many students who have mastered the content. I’m looking forward to sharing this fun class with your wonderful student!
