** Please note: if there is no section of this class scheduled, or one that fits your schedule and your learner has taken the Advanced Vet 1, you may enroll them in any Advanced Vet class 2-6. They do not need to be taken in order, they are only different topics. *** There are also self-paced options of Advanced Vet 2-5 classes! This course will explore topics in veterinary science related to the veterinary laboratory and small animal surgery. In class PowerPoints and discussions will be supplemented with some in class and outside of class projects and videos. Learners should have taken my Introduction to Veterinary Medicine class or have some basic knowledge of veterinary science. Taking Advanced Vet 1 prior to this course is strongly recommended, but not required. Miss Denise’s Teaching Style: My teaching style is caring and relaxed. I am passionate about sharing veterinary science with learners of all abilities from all over the world! I am happy to provide additional support if needed. I am excited to help learners reach their goal to work with animals or to become a veterinary assistant, technician, or veterinarian! Laboratory - External Parasites
In this lesson we will continue out study of parasites from Advanced Vet 2. (It is ok if the learner did not attend Advanced Vet 2, they will be able to follow along.) We will discuss external parasites that are common for cats and dogs.

Laboratory - Hematology and Ear Cytology
In this lesson we will learn about how veterinary lab technicians/ veterinarians collect blood samples, hw samples are stored and a variety of tests that may be done on blood samples. Learners will also learn how to make blood slides (with fake blood) and what they look like under the microscope. Ear cytology slides will also be discussed. (see supplies list)

Surgical Equipment and Instruments
In this lesson learners will become familiar with common equipment, supplies and instruments used in veterinary surgery. Equipment will include the anesthesia machine, surgical monitors, drapes, suture and a variety of surgical instruments.

Surgical Prep of the Patient
Learners will be introduced to the protocols and steps used in preparing a patient for surgery. We will discuss how a patient is put under anesthesia, surgical site prep, and getting the patient ready on the surgery table. The teacher will demonstrate surgical site scrubbing technique and learners will practice in class. (see supplies list)

This course is about hematology, parasites and surgery. Discussions will be around surgery and some photos will be shown that will show a surgical incisions, or some blood. These will not be graphic, but learners should be aware.

Lesson 2 - new microscope slides and "fake blood" (I use gel food coloring, but halloween fake blood, or even ketchup will work!) Lesson 3 - needed for "instrument book" after class project- ability to print several pages from a document provided, notebook or large index cards (to create book), tape/glue/scissors Lesson 4 - a "patient" to scrub ( ideas : a squash, cucumber, plastic doll- must be able to get wet.) a very small bowl of soapy water and one of clean water, paper towels, (and gauze squares if possible no need to buy them if you don't have them, just cut up some paper towel squares) Lesson 5 - gloves with a long enough wrist to be able to make a cuff. (can be plastic, or knitted) Lesson 9- a cloth napkin or piece of fabric that is a similar size, 6-8 pieces of flatware/silverware, making tape (scotch tape ok if needed)

I have been a certified veterinarytechnician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
I have been teaching at local colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs, and an Equine Studies program as well as a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school.
I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has an American Paint Horse, 2 mini horses, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 9 chickens and 4 cats! I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others!
