12 lessons//12 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Veterinary Dentistry 1This lesson will begin with some veterinary dental terminology, and dental anatomy of dogs and cats. Grades of dental disease in dogs and cats will be shown.Week 2Lesson 2Veterinary Dentistry 2We will discuss the full dental cleaning procedure that is done in the veterinary hospital including dental radiology. The importance of home dental care will also be discussed.Week 3Lesson 3Bandaging 1In this lesson we will discuss why a pet might need a bandage. We will also discuss what a veterinarian or technician does to be sure the badge is properly placed. Two different bandages will be demonstrated and students are encouraged to practice during class on a stuffed animal. Bandage care will also be discussed. Supplies needed will be provided the week before. Substitutions are always accepted.Week 4Lesson 4Bandaging 2Two different bandages will be demonstrated and students are encouraged to practice during class on a stuffed animal. The same supplies will be used for this week, that were used last week.Week 5Lesson 5Diseases and Medical Conditions 1Students will learn about some of the common problems we see in our canine and feline patients. Students will be asked if they would like to do research on a medical condition they have heard of before and present it to the class during lessons 6 or 7. No one is required to present, but it will be great experience if they would like to!Week 6Lesson 6Diseases and Medical Conditions 2Students will learn about some of the common problems we see in our canine and feline patients.Week 7Lesson 7Diseases and Medical Conditions 3Students will learn about some of the common problems we see in our canine and feline patients.Week 8Lesson 8Pharmacology 1Students will learn how veterinarians decide what medications a patient needs. They will learn about the importance of safety with handling, storage, and dispensing of medications. Students will practice simple math used to determine how many pills a patient would need, and how prescription labels are filled out.Week 9Lesson 9Pharmacology 2In this lesson we will discuss some of the challenges with medication dispensing including brand name vs generic and different medications with similar packaging. Over the counter medications, vs prescription medication will be discussed. .Week 10Lesson 10Vaccinations/ ImmunologyWhat are vaccines and what do they do? How do vets and owners work together to decide what vaccines a pet needs? What vaccines are commonly given to dogs/cats, and puppies/kittens?Week 11Lesson 11Parasitology 1This lesson will be spent learning about what a parasite is, what they do to their “host” (or don’t do). Parasite lifecycles and how pets get internal parasites will be discussed. How a veterinarian tests for internal parasites will also be shared.Week 12Lesson 12Parasitology 2This last class will be spent learning about some internal parasites common in dogs and cats. Students will learn to identify photos of what a number of parasites and parasite eggs look like under a microscope.

I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. I have been teaching at local colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs, in an equine studies program and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats! I am absolutely passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others!
