Come join me for an interactive class based on some of the science standards for 4th grade (NGSS).  Each class begins with some background information about the topic, and proceeds to a hands on experiment or activity.  I do the experiments with the kids and coach them through the steps.  This is a special class specifically for 9 and 10 year olds.  To help us get to know each other and build a learning community, the class will be capped at 5 students.  

**PLEASE NOTE: this class requires supplies as we will be doing a hands on experiment every week**  

A detailed supply list will be provided allowing enough time to obtain the supplies.  Every effort will be made to keep the supplies reasonable and the cost minimal.  

Schedule:
Week 1: We will examine the speed of an object and the energy it possesses.
Week 2: We will examine what happens to an object's energy when it collides with another object.
Week 3: We will examine how energy is transferred in an electrical circuit.
Week 4: We will examine how energy is transferred in a battery.
Week 5: We will examine how energy is transferred in a motor.
Week 6:  We will design, build, and test a toy car that is powered by the wind.

Approximate supplies required (a detailed week by week list will be provided once registered):
- jello
- plastic cups
- ruler
- rocks or marbles
- bouncy ball
- skewer
- straw
- playdough (homemade or store bought)
- 9V battery
- 9V battery holder
- LED lights
- pipe cleaners
- lemons
- galvanized nail
- piece of copper wire
- wire with alligator clips
- magnet wire
- rare earth magnets
- paper clips
- cardboard
- car wheels (can get creative and use stuff you have at home)
- paper
- hot glue gun and glue sticks

Standards:
4-PS3-1 Use evidence to construct an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object.
4-PS3-2 Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by electric currents.
4-PS3-3 Ask questions and predict outcomes about the changes in energy that occur when objects collide
4-PS3-4 Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.

Each class will last for approximately 1 hour.

There are no prerequisites for this course.
