This is a fast-paced, teacher-led class packed with powerful techniques to help learners spell and decode. To cover as much content as possible during the week we have together, this will be a MICROPHONES OFF CLASS. Questions will be held until the end of class. This is the complete opposite of how I normally run my classes but as this is an accelerated class covering a lot of skills, the structure requires a different environment. This is the most powerful section of content I teach my private students to get them reading on grade level in 12 hours or less. My goal is to get as many students ready for their grade-level reading for the school year in one action-packed week. Students will receive optional homework assignments and a pdf file of follow-up work including stories and word lists. This class is based on my semester-long, "Level 3 Phonics-Based Reading" class. If you are interested in the semester-long version, you can request a time for it to be offered live. It is currently offered as a flex class. You can find the live class listing here: https://outschool.com/classes/level-3-phonics-based-reading-decoding-and-spelling-advanced-code-words-semester-rhT2Nuh4 🤩 Bonus content: At the end of the class, you will receive a free week of my 3rd-grade spelling class to complete at your own pace. This includes three videos and a homework packet PDF. $12 value 📣 Although this class is taught with microphones off, I am available after class to answer questions through the Outschool classroom page and message system. All questions and answers will be posted in the classroom for the benefit of all enrolled students. Recordings are available for review and I am more than happy to support your learner with questions after the class has ended. I am here to support all learners for as long as they need it. 🌟 This class focuses on phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding, multi-syllable words, advanced decoding skills, auditory processing, and spelling. The class is taught using the Phono-Graphix method of reading instruction which is very similar to Orton Gillingham. This is a phonics-based approach that focuses on the sound-to-symbol relationship students need to master to become strong readers and spellers. A multi-sensory approach is used. This is a Dyslexia-friendly class! 📖 The Phono-Graphix reading method has been proven 98% effective at addressing reading problems at any age or ability level. Phono-Graphix is research-based, developmentally appropriate, simple, concrete, and affordable. This program addresses the fundamental skills of decoding, encoding, auditory processing, code knowledge, and sequencing. Level 3 is for learners who are ready to learn the Advanced Code. Students will also learn to segment the sounds to spell the words they are learning to read. 👉🏻The Advanced Code which will be taught extensively in levels 3 and 4 in the Phono-graphix program, refers to any time two or more letters represent one sound. (When we see the two l's in "bell", we only make one /l/ sound. This also refers to vowel teams, and other digraphs, but also includes three and four-letter spellings of one sound like the -igh in "right" and -ough in “bought".) 👀In each class meeting: 📝 Students will create word lists featuring a particular target sound, or spelling pattern. Students are expected to keep a journal for this class. A spiral-bound notebook or a folder with brads to keep word lists in is required. Writing the words is an essential activity as it addresses the multi-sensory element of the class and serves as a tool for review. Here is the schedule we will follow: Monday Session 1: Focus on the Long O and /ow/ sounds. Decoding practice. Monday Session 2: Focus on the sound /er/ and the consonant sound /r/. Tuesday Session 1: Focus on the Long E sound. Decoding practice. Tuesday Session 2: Focus on the Long A sound. Decoding practice. Wednesday Session 1: Focus on the /oo/ and "short /oo/" sounds and Overlap of the spelling [oo]. Wednesday Session 2: Focus on the Short U sound and Overlap of the spelling [ou]. Decoding practice. Thursday Session 1: Focus on Short E and Long I as well as Overlap of the spelling [ea] and [ie]. Thursday Session 2: Overlap of the letter Y. Decoding practice. Friday Session 1: Short O and Decoding practice. Friday Session 2: Long U and Overlap of the spelling [ew] (Note: the days of the week are listed in Central time. The days of the week may differ depending on your time zone.) Because of the accelerated pace of this class, recordings of each session will be available.

I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading therapist. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
