Is your neurodiverse mind a mystery to you? How does your unique brain work? Together, students will learn about different parts of the brain, how the brain controls thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how to unlock the mystery of executive functioning, metacognition, and self-regulation using mindfulness tools. Each week, students will begin with an emotions icebreaker, and then will learn about how the brain functions and various strategies for self-regulation based on neuroscience and mindfulness. Each lesson will consist of a Brain Talk video explaining brain functioning in kid-friendly terms, a whole class discussion on brain functioning, and an interactive activity and/or drawing to further our learning about brain science. Each week, a new tool for self-regulation will be introduced that will help your child learn how to better regulate his or her brain. All class sessions will end with a gratitude circle as a tool for activation of the Professor in our brain, the Prefrontal Cortex. All classes will include short drawing, sorting, and writing tasks or simple paper craft activities. Downloaded resources are posted in the classroom 24 hours before the start of each class. Students should bring paper, a writing utensil, glue, and scissors to each class session. If class materials are unable to be downloaded, students can complete activities using paper and a writing utensil. Class topics are as follows: Week 1: My Brain as Director of My Thoughts, Emotions, and Behaviors Week 2: Meet Mr. Mouse & Learn About the Limbic System Week 3: Meet Myg Week 4: All About Grab-and-Gulp Impulses Week 5: Meet my Thinking & Feeling Brain Week 6: Meet Mrs. Hipp (Your Hippocampus) Week 7: Meet the Professor (Your Prefrontal Cortex) Week 8: Use Brain Talk to Become a Decider (***Please note: I have 8 different lessons that I rotate through. Your child can join us at ANY TIME, but please know that the material repeats after 8 weeks in a row.) This ongoing class is intended to be interactive, and learners are encouraged to keep both video and audio on during each session. If this would be an issue for your learner, please do reach out to me before booking a class. This class uses videos and written materials from the Brain Talk curriculum. Videos are shared via screenshare during the class time. Your learner will not be required to visit any external websites during class. Class recordings will not be shared in the classroom due to copyright restrictions of the Brain Talk curriculum. If your child is unable to attend a scheduled class, please contact me directly regarding options for accessing the lesson and materials for the week. *Please note: This class is not intended to provide direct therapy, and no medical advice or counseling is given during class.

Students will learn basic brain anatomy including where the limbic system, amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex are located; the brain's role in directing throughts, emotions and behaviors; and self-regulation and mindfulness tools including mindful breathing and gratitude that activate the prefrontal cortex and promote self-regulation and impulse control.

I encourage parents to ask your child about what s/he learned so that the self-regulation skills can be practiced by the whole family. Because this is an informational and skill-building class, it is not a substitute for individual, group, or family counseling. No therapy will be provided. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like further guidance with the material.

Hello learners and parents! My name is Christy, and I teach classes that help children unlock the mystery of their mind and promote overall stress management, emotional regulation, and impulse control. I have 17 years of experience using research-based strategies to teach students how their brains work and how to cultivate more calm in their brains and bodies.
My academic background is in School Psychology. I have a Masters in Education (MSE) and Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in the field of School Psychology with over 20 years of experience working with youth. I was certified in 2021 as a Growing Up Mindful (GUM) practitioner. I have worked in the private practice setting since 2016, teaching mindfulness, self-regulation, self-empowerment, and emotional awareness in both the small group and individual setting. As a psychometrist, I have extensive experience administering comprehesive psychoeducational evaluations, including asessments of intellectual functioning, executive functioning, and impulse control and self-regulation. I have worked with individuals ages 4 to adult as well as a wide range of diagnoses, including ADHD, Autism, Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, physical disabilities, and behavior disorders.
