Middle School Integrated Science is a a general science course covering both the physical and life sciences. This course is integrated meaning the fields of science aren't divided. The goal of this course is to provide a introduction to the basic concepts of science. After completing either one of these courses, the student will be set to focus on the individual areas of science in high school. Students will be writing hypotheses and procedures for experiments and learning to analyze their results to gather evidence for conclusions. Mathematical skills through pre-algebra are used in problem solving. Moderate workload can be expected through projects/assignments requiring out of class effort. This will be a blended learning course that incorportates the use of technology in class. Students will interact with lecture, games, slides, and discussion questions. Each class will have the following schedule: Warm up/bellringer, direct instruction, individual practice, group (when applicable), and exit ticket. Students may also have digital projects or labs to complete at home. This course provides an excellent foundation for high school biology, chemistry, and physics therefore encouraging further study of science in high school. The following units will be covered in this course: Unit 1: Forces and Motion Week 1: Distance and displacement 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 2: Balance and unbalance 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 3: Speed-Distance Graphs 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 4: Speed-Acceleration 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 5: Velocity 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 6 and 7: Momentum 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Unit 2: Energy Week 8: Energy 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 9: Forms of Energy 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 10 and 11: Energy Transformation 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Week 12: Energy and Technology 1. Warm Up 2. KWHL Graphic Organizer 3. Lecture 4. Individual Practice 5. Exit Ticket Students will be given individual projects to complete.
Metas de aprendizaje
Forces and motion
How does mathematical representations prove the claim that the total momentum of a system of objects is conserved when there is no net force on the system?
How can we use models to illustrate that energy at the macroscopic scale can be accounted for as a combination of energy associated with the relative positions of particles/objects?
Energy
How does designing, constructing, and refining a device that works within given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy?
How can we plan and conduct an investigation to apprise evidence that the transfer of thermal energy when two components of different temperature are combined within a closed system results in a more uniform energy distribution among the components in the system (second law of thermodynamics)?

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I am secondary educator certified in teaching science (7-12). I have attained an MS in Criminal Justice with a concentration in law enforcement administration. I received a BS in Biology with a concentration Microbiology from Southern University in Baton Rouge. I have been the Science and Engineering Fair coordinator a my current school for the last three semesters. Prior to becoming a secondary educator, I was employed as an environmental and manufacturing lab analyst specializing in quantitative analysis.
In my spare time, I am the administrator and founder of NGSS Physical Science professional learning network (570 current members). In the future, I plan on opening an educational consulting firm that would focus on incorporating technology and NGSS Science standards in the classroom.
