Welcome to LGBTQ+ Musical Storytime! During this four-day camp, students will explore gender identity and self-expression through books, music, and more. Each class will involve sing-a-long activities, a children's book read-aloud, guided discussions, and an interactive art or dance activity with a song by a Transgender and/or Nonbinary musician. Throughout the week, the topics covered will help students gain an understanding and appreciation for a diversity of gender experiences including Cis, Trans, and Nonbinary genders, and we will explore different ways that people can express their identities. Students will have the opportunity to use their new knowledge to explore the ways they feel about and express their own identities. We will also learn a bit about the history of LGBTQ+ rights movements and how we can all participate in the world in a way that is respectful of people of all genders and identities. Students of all genders are welcome in class, and no prior experience or knowledge of LGBTQ+ identities is needed. While all content will be directed in an age-appropriate way, there will be some themes discussed in class that may bring up challenging emotions for students. There will be mentions of the discrimination that Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Non-conforming people have faced throughout history and continue to face today. You may look into the Day 4 read-aloud book, "Stonewall: A Building. An Uprising. A Revolution." for an idea of the type of content that will be covered. I will be sure to monitor how students are coping with the content during class and I will guide students toward finding the hope, empowerment, change, and community in the stories and concepts we address.
Additionally, students should have a safe space during class to move around, dance, etc.
