Experiencia de clase

Gender non-conforming is a big umbrella that covers many different gender experiences. Trans, nonbinary, genderfluid, and even just kids who like to challenge gender roles can fit under this umbrella. And it can be lonely.

This class is for any young person who needs to hear statements of affirmation and support from someone in addition to their own parents or trusted grownups. In the class, we'll get to know each other, share our pronouns, and talk a little bit about how we identify. (Students are not obligated to share pronouns, but will have a chance to. If students are unaware of pronouns, my instruction will look like this: "When people talk about me, I want them to call me SHE. If you see my picture, you should say, 'That's a picture of HER.' What should we use when we talk about you?")

The bulk of the class will be spent talking about the things we're interested in! This is a place for kids to share what they're interested in without having to worry about someone judging them.

Kids will have a chance to show off their favorite outfits, toys, activities, and belongings in an environment that is fully accepting and supportive. I am open to teaching this class one-on-one because I know how important it is for kids to get these affirmations!

What kinds of affirmations will children receive in this class? Participants will be affirmed for the things they love and do. Sample affirmations: That is a wonderful dress! / I do love your short hair--it looks great! / Everyone, let's tell [Student] something we love about the toy they brought to show us today. / I think your outfit is very cool. / In this class, there are no rules that say boys, girls, and nonbinary kids have to do things a certain way because they are boys, girls, or nonbinary kids.

I am a cisgender woman with two gender non-conforming kids. (I'll share more in class, not in the class profile!) I've been teaching feminism classes on Outschool since early 2020, and I have had the joy of teaching many, many nonbinary, trans, and other gender non-conforming kids on the platform.

I teach this class because I know how much my kids needed safe places to start exploring gender in a protected and meaningful way. This class is designed for people like: a boy who loves to wear dresses, a girl who gets teased for having really short hair, nonbinary kids who are trying out new pronouns, trans kids who are just beginning their transition, and any kid who needs to hear that they are special and treasured for who they are!

This class is social, fast-paced, and adapts to each group of students' needs. Participants are encouraged to share kind words with one another and celebrate the things that make each of us unique.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been teaching on Outschool since January 2020. My primary topic is feminism, feminist history, and feminist pop culture analysis. I was an English professor for more than a decade and have extensive practice leading feminism-related discussions in person and online. My graduate degree is in Creative Nonfiction, and I studied feminist narratives extensively as part of my MFA. I have published numerous essays about feminism, including for publications like Salon, Jezebel, Everyday Feminism, The Shriver Report, and more. I believe in intersectional feminism, which explores the intersections of gender and other forms of oppression, including racism, ableism, classism, and homophobia, among other issues. I am trans-inclusive, non-binary affirming, and aspire to be anti-racist in my teaching.
