Tarea
1-2 horas por semana. Each week the students will be provided with a recording to listen to as well as weekly readings on the classroom board. Each student will also be provided with their individual login to Ck-12, which is a site I will be using to provide additional assignments for the students. This class is designed for students to work at a pace that they see to fit their educational needs, while still interacting with the teacher and other students. In both Ck-12 and on the Outschool classroom page, there will be discussions based on the lesson material, that I will reply with feedback and other students will have the opportunity to do so as well. Each quiz in Ck-12 is graded, but the student does have several tries to get the grade they desire. The lesson material will still be available after the class duration if students would like to continue taking notes. A few small projects will be assigned to go along with the lessons to help to expand knowledge on the concepts discussed. This project can be submitted through the Outschool classroom board or through the Ck-12 site, whichever the student prefers. This class is designed to best suit each student individually, therefore, if a student would like more reading materials or discussion between peers, then I can provide that. Families can also use all of the recordings, discussions, the project, and reading materials the way that they see works best for their student(s).
Informe de progreso
The teacher can provide an overall report of the student's participation and grades throughout the duration of the course, if requested by the learner or parent.

In this class, we will study the common core standards of middle school science. We will study topics such as the units of measurement & conversions that scientists use daily, types of energy such as sound, light, etc, and geology. Throughout this first semester of middle school science, students will get an introduction into topics such as force and motion that will be further developed upon in high school years. They will also expand their knowledge on topics in the fields of astronomy and earth science, to which they have received an introduction in the previous grades.
Most assignments in this course can either be printed or viewed digitally, as chosen by the family.

Projects will not be due until the last week of class and can be extended if needed.
Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material.
Students will also work with CK-12 an interactive learning platform, that allows students to answer practice tests, read articles, and work in interactive textbooks. Some of the assignments will be assigned on this platform. Each student will be provided with their own login information to access their assignments and readings, which the teacher will set up.
Homework assignments will be assigned weekly. They will include, articles, CK-12 practice tests and articles, worksheets, and nearpod lessons. The teacher will provide feedback on submitted assignments and will be available to answer any questions the students may have. Each week, a discussion question will be posted to the classroom board for the students to review concepts discussed on the topic that is being covered that week. This class is one of the parts of middle school science. Each part covers different topics and can be taken in any order.

Metas de aprendizaje

By the end of this course, students will develop an understanding of concepts required for many middle school curriculums - scientific & temperature conversions, basic physics concepts - force, motion, acceleration, & energy, astronomy, and earth science.
Unit 1 - Units of Measurement & Conversions
Students will learn to understand mass, volume, & distance measurements and learn to convert these units. Additionally, density calculations and temperature conversion formulas (Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin).

Unidad 1: Units of Measurement & Conversions
Lección 1:
Conversions & The Metric System
In this lesson, students will learn about a variety of measurements and conversions that scientists use including mass, volume, and distance measurements, as well as how to calculate these and convert from one unit to another. Additionally, students will learn about some of the scientific tools used to make these kinds of measurements like the triple beam balance.

Lección 2:
Density & Temperature Conversions
In this lesson, students will learn about density, how to calculate density, and about heat and temperature conversions. Students will learn formulas for converting between Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin and be provided with a variety of examples and explanations to aid with learning these concepts.

Unidad 2: Physics - Force, Motion, Newton's Laws, & Energy
Lección 3:
Speed, Velocity, & Acceleration
In this lesson, students will learn about speed, velocity, and acceleration. Students will learn how to calculate using formulas explained in the lesson recording.

Lección 4:
Newton's Laws
In this lesson, students will learn about Newton's three laws of motion - the Law of Inertia, the Law of Acceleration, and the Law of Opposing Forces. By examining these laws, students will develop a better understanding of friction, inertia, and velocity. Students will be provided with numerous examples and explanations of the concepts, so that they may implement them into their homework.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. In the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their life to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
