In this four-week course, students will learn the history behind some of the most famous shipwrecks. They will have a chance to learn about why they are famous, theories of why they sunk, and where the remains are today. Students will take a journey into history and explore the ships that have still yet to be discovered as well as the research groups working hard to uncover their locations and remains. We will explore famous pirate ships and discuss the history of how these ships were used for piracy and became famous for being linked to pirates such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd and discuss their whereabouts today. We will also explore underwater technology such as deep water submersibles and plans for recovery efforts of challenging shipwrecks such as Ernest Shackleton's Endurance. We will also look at some of the challenges faced when discovering an unknown shipwreck when its remains are extremely valuable. Students will also have a chance to learn about some of the techniques used to transport and protect precious findings once the shipwrecks have been discovered. Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material. Students will also work with Gimkit, a website that allows students to participate in interactive quizzes that will reemphasize the material presented to them in the recordings.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. At the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean-up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their lives to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post-graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning, and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
