In this FLEX class students will be given topics to research, a note sheet, and will report to class to present their findings. *This class has no LIVE meetings. Videos will be posted explaining the project each week. Students will us their research skills, note sheet, and create a presentation that they will upload to the class page and share with their peers.* **This class is also available in LIVE class format. If your learner took the live class format, they are more than welcome to join this class with new peers and research different topics each week. They will not be given the same animal, debate, or careers they researched during the LIVE class. Additionally, if your child signs up for this class as a FLEX class and also wants to join the live sessions, they are more than welcome to take this class in both formats! It is a great way to meet friends, continue researching, practice their research and presentations skills, and practice preparing materials to speak in front of others-or on video** This will help students learn how to research, how to navigate resources, how to collect information, and practice presenting their findings to their peers. When students have the opportunity to practice speaking in front of others in a small group setting, they can build their confidence, prepare for questions and answers, and learn to communicate important information in a less stressful environment before venturing off to present in front of larger classrooms or groups. Week 1: Discuss what research is, where to find information, types of websites that will have more accurate information, explain how to document their findings on their note sheet, review the topics for the upcoming weeks, and discuss various ways they can present to the class. Students will be asked to interact by choosing numbers between 1-30. Each student will choose 2 numbers which will reveal their animal choices. They will choose ONE of the two animals and complete a research project to present to their peers. They can present via video/audio and share on the main page or create a Google Slide/Powerpoint presentation with their information, or complete their note sheet. Students will be encouraged to interact on the main page by asking their peers questions, commenting on their research to compliment their hard work, or add additional facts about the animal, if they know any! Before Week 2: Student presentations- Students will be presenting research on an animal and posting to the class wall. Teacher: Will engage with each presentation upload, provide feedback, and encourage interaction on the class wall. Week 2- Video: Argumentative Writing/ Debate topics. We will discuss how to start planning for argumentative writing topics and how this relates to debate. Project explanation. Students will be asked to interact by choosing numbers between 1-30. Each student will choose 2 numbers which will reveal their debate topic choices. They will choose ONE of the two debate topics and complete a research project to present to their peers. They can present via video/audio and share on the main page or create a Google Slide/Powerpoint presentation with their information, or complete their note sheet. Students will be encouraged to interact on the main page by asking their peers questions, commenting on their research to compliment their hard work, or add their views on the debate topic. Before Week 3: Student presentations- Students will be presenting research on the pros and cons of a debate topic and posting to the class wall. Week 3: Video: Discussions pertaining to career paths and higher education choices. Teacher will explain where to find information, go over the note sheet, and students will choose two number on the main class wall. They will choose one of the two careers they chose OR research a career interest of their own. They will also provide information regarding schools or certification paths for their career of choice. This will be part of their research for their presentation. Teacher: Will engage with each presentation upload, provide feedback, and encourage interaction on the class wall. Before Week 4: Student presentations- Students will be presenting research on a career path and posting on the main wall. Week 4: Video- Discussing primary and secondary sources. Students will brainstorm ideas for their independent research. Students can choose numbers to have helpful suggestions they can use for research or they can choose their own topic. Week 5: Student presentations- Students will be presenting research on a topic of choice (they will send their idea to the teacher for approval prior to beginning their research to ensure it is class friendly) Class will remain available for 6 weeks so that students have extra time to complete, upload, and interact with each other's presentations! Enrolled learners will receive note sheets but are welcome to use their own as well. I will also send a Google Slides template in the event that the student wants to make their own virtual presentation. My teaching style is fun, engaging, and student-centered. Classes must meet the minimum of 3 learners in order to proceed. It is important that we have at least 3 students enrolled for social interaction, questions and answers, small group audience for presentations, and for the class to be the most effective.
