This is a FLEX class with no live meetings. All Quiet On The Western Front is set during World War I, behind the German frontlines where a young soldier, Paul Baumer, is assigned. The setting weaves back and forth between the war front and the camp where Baumer stays. The overriding theme of All Quiet on the Western Front is the terrible brutality of war. It is considered one of the greatest anti-war texts in its depiction of the futility of war and its effects on an entire generation. This course provides students with the flexibility to engage with the novel at their own pace and offers various options for demonstrating understanding, making it accessible for students with diverse learning needs. The novel, set during World War I, delves into the brutal realities of war and its profound impact on an entire generation. In this FLEX course, students will not have live meetings but will be expected to complete assigned readings, participate in class discussions, access Nearpod for interactive activities, and showcase their analysis through written assignments, PowerPoint presentations, or oral projects. Students are encouraged to choose the format that best suits their learning style and accessibility needs, such as using the classic version of the book, the graphic novel adaptation, or an audiobook. Additionally, while watching the movie adaptation is not mandatory, it can provide valuable context for the story. Each week of the course will focus on specific chapters and include the following activities: Week 1: Read Chapter 1 before the course begins. Reading Assignment and Review of Chapter Abstracts. Class Discussion: Share one initial comment and provide a comment on another student's answer. Complete one Nearpod lesson featuring short answer questions, multiple-choice questions, collaborative boards, vocabulary games, videos, and quizzes. Summative Assignment: A final assignment that can be modified based on student choice and, if needed, can be graded for transcript purposes. Week 2: Read Chapters 2 and 3. Continue with the assigned activities for the week, including Reading Assignment, Class Discussion, Nearpod lesson, and Summative Assignment. Week 3: Read Chapters 4 and 5. Complete the assigned activities for the week, including Reading Assignment, Class Discussion, Nearpod lesson, and Summative Assignment. Week 4: Read Chapter 6. Proceed with the assigned activities for the week, including Reading Assignment, Class Discussion, Nearpod lesson, and Summative Assignment. Week 5: Read Chapters 7 and 8. Engage with the assigned activities for the week, including Reading Assignment, Class Discussion, Nearpod lesson, and Summative Assignment. Week 6: Read Chapter 9. Continue with the assigned activities for the week, including Reading Assignment, Class Discussion, Nearpod lesson, and Summative Assignment. Week 7: Read Chapters 10 and 11. Complete the assigned activities for the week, including Reading Assignment, Class Discussion, Nearpod lesson, and Summative Assignment. Week 8: Use this week to catch up on any missing assignments and finalize any remaining summative projects. Throughout the course, the integration of Nearpod activities with classroom discussions will provide a project-based approach to learning. As a former special education teacher, I am experienced in modifying assignments and scaffolding learning to support students' individual needs. Please reach out if you require any adaptations or additional support. Get ready to explore the themes of war and humanity in "All Quiet on the Western Front" through this flexible and engaging FLEX course.

I will be using carefully curated videos and resources within Nearpod. I will use Nearpod in the teacher-directed mode. Students may choose to create a free Nearpod account and have two windows open to participate in student activities. Or, students can watch through my shared screen and participate through annotation. Nearpod is an approved third-party educational tool. It is rated as excellent through Common Sense Education. You may see their review here: https://www.commonsense.org/education/app/nearpod.
From CommonSenseMedia, "Parents need to know that this anti-war epic from the 1930s digs into the physical, psychological, and emotional damage that war wreaks on soldiers in great detail. Soldiers are wounded and die, sometimes in agony, sometimes in a bloody mess, and sometimes slow and painfully. The war scenes are graphic but don't compare in gruesomeness to more modern fare ... The soldiers occasionally talk about women and allude to sex. In one scene, several soldiers bring food to French women in exchange for (offscreen) intimacy."

Classroom Expectations:
In my classroom, kindness and readiness are the foundation. I welcome learners of all abilities and prioritize understanding and support for each student's unique communication and behavioral needs. I primarily base my classes on developmental or academic level rather than a specific age or grade. If you believe your older learner would benefit from a listed class, please enroll, and I will reach out to you for further information.
I strongly encourage learners of all abilities to participate to the fullest extent possible. I firmly believe that behavior is a form of communication, and I am dedicated to understanding what each student is trying to express.
Look forward to meeting you!
