This class offers an opportunity for friendship and fun all while reviewing fundamental academic skills. It is intended for middle school students with disabilities who may need more wait time, use a communication device, or benefit from a smaller group. Each student is given multiple opportunities to participate in whatever way fits them best. The games are thoughtfully prepared to allow for a scaffolded learning experience, meaning all levels of academic mastery benefit from the experience. OVERVIEW OF CLASS 🌍 Greeting Time: Start our class with a warm welcome and positive vibes! Would You Rather? Question: Two unusual choices to help promote critical thinking and answering questions. Guess Who/Where: Learners ask and answer questions to discover the chosen picture. Topics depend on the monthly theme and may include birds, famous women, or things to do while camping. Questions may be broad (what color is in the box?) to more specific (is the person an athlete?). Bingo: The caller will ask questions and the players will determine which picture fits. When a player has Bingo, they list off the things they have crossed off. It reinforces the monthly vocabulary theme as well as encourages full sentences. Shut the Box: Simple math game to cross off numbers 1-12 by rolling dice and performing addition and subtraction. I Spy Alphabet: themed pictures to challenge students to find things that begin with each letter of the alphabet using nouns and adjectives. CLASS EXPECTATIONS 🤔 📹 Video On, Please!: Let's keep those videos on for a more connected and interactive experience. 🤹♂️ Show What You Know: Every student has a chance to showcase their knowledge in their preferred way. ☕ Take a Break: Need a breather? Feel free to turn off your sound and video until you're ready to rejoin. 👩👧👦 Parental Support: Parents, stay off-screen but you can be nearby for any needed assistance. CONTENT 📚 Each month brings a different theme. Additional themes may be added to reflect student interest. January: Winter activities, Winter Olympics, United States February: Black History Month, dental health awareness, Valentine's Day March: Women's History Month, inventions, St. Patrick's Day April: Weather, seasons, flowers, Earth Day May: Birds, water, sun June: Summer activities, Summer Olympics July: Ocean and beach, Independence Day August: Farm, dinosaurs, zoo, travel September: Community Helpers, school supplies October: Fall, apples, pumpkins, camping (Halloween theme is a separate class) November: Leaves, Native American Heritage Month, elections December: Winter games and activities (Christmas theme is a separate class) Learners will need to print activity pages to use with the class. The theme will be posted monthly and pages can be reused for the month.
