Students are asked to complete their assignment if they do not finish before class is over. Students/parents are welcome and encouraged to send me the student's work through Outschool if they would like it proofread and/or would like some additional feedback on the student's writing. Parents can also practice reading comprehension strategies at home: 1. Be sure you have your child's attention. 2. Minimize distractions. 3. As you read, have students repeat phrases back to you. 4. Ask yourself questions while you read…”I wonder why…” 5. Use “wait time.” Give students a minute to think before repeating your question. 6. Check for understanding. Ask them to repeat the question back to you. 7. Help students make connections between the book and their own experiences! 8. For emergent writers, always pair writing and drawing together! Draw and write with the story in mind!Evaluación
Students will be given opportunities for speaking and oral reading. Students will be assessed informally through participation, questioning, and by completing a written response and drawing based on the book we read. (Note: We will review pre-writing strategies for young writers who do not yet write words.) Students are asked to complete their assignment if they do not finish before class is over. Students/parents are welcome and encouraged to send the student's work to me through Outschool if they would like it proofread and/or would like some additional feedback on the student's writing.Experiencia de clase

Nivel Intermediate
In this ongoing class, learners will receive 1:1 English Language Arts tutoring 1 time per week for 45 minutes. This course is for children (native speakers OR English language learners) who read/speak English at an elementary to intermediate level but need more practice with a native speaker for pronunciation, speaking/conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and writing. Each lesson will engage students in conversation about a high-interest anchor text on which I will base the week's instruction. We will work on vocabulary, fluency, and writing to build students confidence. This personalized class is certain to capture your child's attention as we make connections, learn key components of good story structure, and practice English language skills at the same time! In the first lesson, we will read a basic passage based on the child's age, reading level, or individual goals (communicated between teacher and parent prior to class starting). I will assess the student to gain a better understanding of their needs and interests. Students at this age are also learning to be good readers. Good readers use prior knowledge, make predictions, summarize, question, infer, visualize, and make inferences. WHEW! That's a LOT! It is important for children to be able to comprehend what they read--but HOW does that happen? Students must apply literal, inferential, and evaluative skills to answer who, what, when, where, why, and how questions based on the text. In this camp, we will practice answering comprehension questions focused on inferences and making predictions. Students will review new vocabulary, and answering the 5W's + H (how) questions while reading each story. During the 45 minute class: • Students will be welcomed to class. We will quickly review the class rules and our learning goals. • We will go over a short 5-minute mini lesson on vocabulary and background information. Students will then spend approximately 20 minutes (with teacher guidance) reading and discussing a story and making connections to real-life. Emphasis will be placed on building the literary vocabulary (setting, characters, events, problem/solution.) Students will be given many opportunities for speaking and oral reading. • Teacher support will be available to the student at all times. •We will review the material covered in the mini lesson and I will answer any questions prior to dismissing the class. Day 1: Read a basic passage based on the child's age, reading level, or individual goals (communicated between teacher and parent prior to class starting); grammar taken from (from The Reading Teacher's Book of Lists by Fry, Kress, and Fountoukidis). Day 2: Review the grammar lesson and and apply it to written sentences. Review story vocabulary and read the story A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech. Day 3: Respond to a writing prompt, applying the grammar lesson, reading content, and vocabulary. Day 5: Apply the learning and vocabulary to make connections to real life. (NOTE: Children learn vocabulary, sequencing, and prediction skills through repetition of stories. This will be our focus during the week as students master all areas of the English language: speaking, fluency, writing, listening, and reading comprehension! Students who register for the class on a regular basis will be presented with new texts each week to continue challenging them as English students! Please message me about your child's goals, books they need to read with my support, or areas in which I can support them in class!)
