Is your child getting prepared to write their college essay? In this class, students will learn about the Common Application (an application used by more than 1,000 colleges), the prompts and its requirements, organizing your essay, writing a good hook, revising and editing. Week 1: Class 1: Students will become familiar with the Common Application, the writing prompts and brainstorm to decide which essay they want to write. Class 2: Students will come to class with their idea chosen and answer questions related to their topic and begin a very basic outline. Week 2: Class 1: Students will read and study examples of college essays and write a more finalized outline. Class 2: Students will read a few more examples of college essays and begin drafting in classes. Week 3: Class 1: Students will come with a completed "sloppy copy" first draft and evaluate each section based on the Six Characteristics of Good Writing. Class 2: Students will continue evaluating their essay for revisions and begin drafting a second draft. Week 4: Class 1: Students will begin revising their essays and ask the teacher questions as they go. Class 2: Students will finish their essays and ask teacher questions as they go.
