In this course, students will dive deeply into Creative Writing by creating a work of fiction from beginning to end. Along the way, students will learn story elements, organization of writing, grammar skills and critical thinking skills. Week 1: After a brief time of introductions, students will learn about stories – the types, elements of a story, and the six-step writing process. Week 2: In this class, students will learn about creating a rich setting and strong characters and use a graphic organizer to start thinking about their character. Week 3: In this class, students will consider the conflict in their story and use a graphic organizer to plot out their story. They will also be given 15 to 20 minutes for drafting in individual breakout rooms. The teacher will visit each room to answer questions. Week 4: Students will learn about common grammatical errors in story such as verb tense, capitalization and using quotations for dialogue. Then they will continue working on their story. The teacher will again visit each room to answer questions. Week 5: Students will be taught about tone and perspective and do activities to strengthen these skills and apply them to the story. This will be the final day of drafting for students. In this class, the teacher will give critiques to the students on their work. Week 6: Student will learn about how to give feedback on a story and how to receive feedback in a story so that the student can think about their story more deeply, develop the portions that the readers like and where they have questions. This is a time for positivity, encouragement but also being open to feedback. Week 7: Students will redraft their stories based on feedback. Their final copy is due by the following week. Directions on how to submit the paper in a final form will be given.
