Students will start each class with a lesson on different elements of a story. Then students will be given about 15 to 20 minutes to write. In this class students will learn. Week 1Lesson 1Writing ProcessStudents will learn about the steps of the writing process and begin the step of brainstorming.Lesson 2Plot StructureStudents will learn about the elements of plot structure such as exposition, climax and resolutionLesson 3CharacterStudents will learn about developing a character and creating a backstory to deepen a story.Lesson 4SettingStudents will learn about setting and the importance of adding sensory details to a setting.Lesson 5DialogueStudents will learn both how to write dialogue and how to use dialogue to enrich a story.Week 2Lesson 6RevisingStudents will learn the ARMS method for revising there story to present to the critique group.Lesson 7EditingStudents will use various techniques in order to edit their writing to present to critique group.Lesson 8Critique GroupsStudents will present their writing in a critique group and receive feedback and reciprocate.Lesson 9RevisingStudents will apply feedback from classmate's and their own writing goals to create a final draft.Lesson 10EditingStudents will edit their final draft and create a neat final presentation to turn in for a grade or teacher feedback.
I have a Bachelor's in Creative Writing, a Masters in Elementary Education, certification in English for grades 6-12. I'm also an active writer of children's picture books (in the editing process) and a member of an international society for children's book writers.
