This class is a step up from Three Essay Writing Tips. This class will give the learners further confidence in writing essays. First, we will look at the 5 W questions and the bonus question How? From this, we will make a spider diagram and discuss how this is useful for organising thoughts when writing an essay. Next, we will explore tone and audience. We write for certain audiences, and this means we change our syntax, phrases and vocabulary. Learners are often aware of the difference between persuasive and argumentative writing and this section will feed into these two different modes of writing. I will cover the use of cliches in this section. The third part of the lesson examines vocabulary. I will ask learners if they have a wide vocabulary. We will look at the adverb “very”, how it is used and over used and words that can be used instead eg “immensely”. Then we will look at changing the adjectives to form more complex work, eg “very big” becomes “enormous”. “Very small” becomes “minuscule”. We will then look at two examples of essay titles and the learners will make spider diagrams and form the basis of an essay. The lesson will be relaxed. Learners can interact freely with me, and with other learners. No previous knowledge is required, but if learners are young or not confident in essay writing, they may want to complete my previous class Three Essay Writing Tips first.
