Grado de EE. UU. 2 - 4
This class will introduce or review the steps of the scientific method using candy canes! We will compare mixtures and solutions and identify the signs of a chemical reaction. The class will open with students sharing their favorite holiday foods or candies with one another. Then, we will place the steps of the scientific method in order, define them, and discuss how the process can be viewed as a cycle. Next, we will set up our two experiments! Students will use their worksheets (posted in the classroom) to make predictions and label their set-up. We will pause the experiments periodically to make observations and share with the class. ***Experiment 1: Dissolving Candy Cane We will test how fast the candy canes dissolve in various solutions. We will compare how the candy canes change in cold water, warm water, and vinegar. ***Experiment 2: Fizzing Candy Canes We will use baking soda and vinegar on our candy canes and observe the signs of a chemical reaction! My teaching style is hands-on and motivating. Each learner will be encouraged to share their observations with the class, as well as pose new questions for further investigation after class. Learning doesn't have to stop just because class is over!
