The Secret of the Old Clock is a classic children's book full of mystery, cleverness, and adventure. In this four-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions and engaging activities as we read Carolyn Keene's introductory novel to the iconic character of Nancy Drew. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class. Whether your student has never heard of Nancy or is an enthusiastic fan, this class will be full of fun for all. We will explore the text and it's themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion. The reading schedule will be as follows: Lesson 1: chapters 1-5 Discussion and activities will focus on author and setting: How does the time period shape the way Nancy is portrayed in the text? Lesson 2: chapters 6-10 Focus on character contrast and development: What are literary foils and how does Keene use them? Lesson 3: chapters 11-15 Focus on plot and predictions: We will work together to fill out a plot map of what we have read so far and make predictions of the end of the text. Lesson 4: chapters 16-20 (finish book) Focus on themes developed through the story: What is right vs. what is legal.

I am passionate about building authentic positive relationships with my students. By modeling healthy relationships and creating a safe place for them to flourish, I hope to give my students life skills beyond the content I teach. I create safe, inviting spaces for kids to build relationships with other students, practicing the skills of empathy in the context of a caring community.
My husband and I have two daughters and two dogs. I love to read, bake, and knit (but not all at the same time!). I can't wait to see you in class!
