Nivel Beginner - Intermediate
Students will be provided with a recorded lesson for each topic. During the lessons there will be a slide presentation as the veterinary care needs, important husbandry concerns and medical conditions that we see in these exotic and pocket pet species will be discussed. Learners will be provided with optional hands on projects each lesson that will be based on the animal types discussed. They will be asked to share photos or videos showing their projects. Feedback will be given, but no grades will be provided. Additional carefully selected YouTube video links will be provided for additional learning. Topics vary depending on species but may include; common husbandry issues, parasites, dental care, medical conditions, common diseases, metabolic considerations/ issues.T ***This class will not be a place to get medical questions answered about your own pets. If your pet has a problem or you have questions about their health, please contact your local veterinarian. **** It is highly recommended that you do plenty of research and locate an exotics vet in your area BEFORE getting an exotic pet.

Rodents- Guinea Pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats - This lesson will discuss how the vet will hold these little ones and give them a physical exam. Common diseases and medical conditions will also be discussed.

Rabbits and Chinchillas
Rabbits and Chinchillas - These fuzzy favorites will be the topic of this lesson! How they are handled in the vet hospital as well as the way a vet does a complete physical exam will be discussed. Problems that we see them for in the vet clinic/hospital will be addressed.

Snakes and Lizards
Snakes and Lizards - These popular pets will be reviewed and the way that vets help their clients care for these reptiles will be discussed. The importance of knowing the species needs in order for them to stay happy and healthy will also be shared.

Ferrets and Hedgehogs
Ferrets and Hedgehogs - Although some states in the U.S. do not allow these animals as pets, many do. These are not for every family, but those who own them enjoy them very much. The needs of these critters as well as why they are commonly see in the vet hospital are the focus of this lesson.

I am a certified veterinary technician and veterinary educator. I have worked for 30 plus years in a practice that sees most common exotic and pocket pet species. I have hands on experience with all of the species we will be discussing.
I have a MEd from Colorado State University and and I am now finishing up my second Master’s program and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
I am excited to share my love of veterinary medicine for all of these fascinating animals with your aspiring veterinary professional!
