Come learn about Cathay Williams, the only recorded African American woman to serve in the U.S. Army as a Buffalo Soldier and the first African American woman to enlist in the U.S. Army. In this class, students will be introduced to William's remarkable life story from enslavement to military service from her first-hand account. Students will discover the history of the Buffalo Soldier regiments and have an opportunity to sharpen their map skills as they mark the many states where Williams lived and served. This class activity requires students to work together to create a timeline of Williams' life from her birth in Independence, Missouri to her death in Pueblo, Colorado and to transfer that data onto a map handout that will be provided.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their U.S. geography skills by identifying the various states where Cathay Williams lived and served. They will also be required to create a chronology of Williams' life to help them with the mapping activity. Students will learn about the importance of first-hand accounts.

My 2017 peer-reviewed and published encyclopedia article “Passing Soldiers” printed in Women in American History: A Social, Political, and Cultural Encyclopedia and edited by Peg Lamphier and Kathleen Barker references the life and service of Cathay Williams. My research for this class is based on the research for the article and is grounded in Phillip Thomas Tucker's biographical work entitled Cathy Williams: From Slave to Buffalo Soldier.
