Come explore our Earth and its many marvels during these Ongoing Science Lessons in Nonna's House. Each week will cover one of 34 different topics from NC essential standards for Third Grade science which shares many of its standards, if not all, with other states. Class will meet once a week for 60 minutes.
I believe that everyone learns their own way. To accommodate the different learning styles I will be following the 5E Science Lesson Plan which includes visual, auditory, and physical learning in each lesson:

5E
# 5min opening and goals
Engage~ 10 min: Welcome, Lesson Goals, and Question(s) to gauge previous knowledge and to focus thinking towards the lesson (PowerPoint slides)
Explore~ 10 min: Class Discussion of topic related data/information and words to know (PowerPoint slides and worksheets)
Explain~ 15-20 min: Teacher Directed Instruction (PowerPoint slides)
Elaborate~ 15-20 min : Experiment and/or Activity to further understanding (YouTube accessed occasionally)
Evaluate~ 5 min: Review and Self Evaluation of day's learning goals (goals are introduced at the beginning of class)

Classes will run September- May. Every September classes will begin at Topic 1 and rotate through each topic. Some weeks will be skipped due to holidays and winter/spring break schedules so be aware of the dates for each class. Take a look at the outline below to know where we are in the topic rotation.
AUTO-ENROLLED SESSIONS WILL FOLLOW THE SAME CALENDAR. EXAMPLE: YOU REGISTER TO START ON JANUARY 6th, YOU WILL BEGIN AT TOPIC 16 NOT TOPIC 1. ACADEMIC YEAR ENDS AT THE END OF MAY! The Entire year is 34 weeks however, if you start mid year you will not have access to prior classes already taught which will shorten your weeks from 34.

A "Toolbox" of supplies as well as handouts and experiment supplies will be required for every class. Toolbox supplies are listed below and Weekly Handouts & Lesson supply lists will be available on the class page the week prior to each class.
Students will self-assess themselves at the conclusion of each lesson based of the learning goals for each lesson.

!! PLEASE SEE SYLLABUS FOR LESSON OUTLINE FOR THE YEAR !!

** If your child has any medical diagnosis that concerns or affects their learning it is very important that you make me aware prior to their first class. I can not adjust or alter activities or expectations for any individual needs if I am unaware of those needs. It is your responsibility as their primary caregiver to help me give them the best learning experience we can together. If a child has reached a frustration level I need to be informed so that we can further adjust moving forward. Ultimately, we are a TEAM in your child's educational experience.

~ Students will not be admitted beyond 5 minutes after class starts. The lesson will be in session and I will not have the opportunity to check the waiting room to admit students who are late. It is up to both the student and the parent to make sure you arrive to class on time. Refunds for missed classes will not be issued. However if the class is offered on another date and time you can be transferred to that class if possible.

~~ ALL Students are required to be on-screen during the entirety of the class. Students who refuse to keep their cameras on will be given a warning then placed in the waiting room once. If they continue to have their camera off they will be bumped from class and no refund given. This is for YOUR child's safety and my preference as an instructor to be able to connect with my learners- no exceptions.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will learn the Third Grade Standard Course of Study Topics throughout the year. These include Forces & Motion, The Universe and Earth and its Systems, Energy, Matter, Structures and Functions of Plants, Animals, and Ecosystems.

I am a former elementary school teacher from North Carolina. My experience working with elementary aged children is varied and spans over 30 years. I home schooled my Special Education child for his elementary school years. I volunteered with both the Girls and Boy Scouts of America. My professional career in education began 22 years ago with Early Childhood Education. I moved into public schooling first as a substitute teacher than a teaching assistant for both general and special/exceptional students. I worked in grades 1st - 8th in all four major subjects until I completed my own schooling and licensing to become an elementary teacher where I taught grades 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th. My formal Education is in Elementary Education with a minor in history from Ashford University in Iowa. While I loved my students and fellow education professionals, I was disillusioned with the path education was taking and the cookie cutter assembly line way it was being taught in the public schools. I decided to take my love of education and my skills to seek a better way to pass on knowledge to those who would love to learn outside of the traditional classroom.
