Each session is customized for a student's specific writing goals/needs based on parent/guardian provided information and teacher observation. The first session is a get to know you time, where we will set a baseline for future classes. Students complete a quick writing assessment for the instructor to gauge writing abilities so the teacher can meet the student where he or she is at with writing skills. For those students starting with parts of speech: During each class, we will review a topic or skill (depending on goals) using a PowerPoint lesson, guided notes and practice activities (online games, short writing pieces, etc.) Students will engage in discussions, and record information on teacher provided documents. Essay writing: Students will practice writing short answer responses (RACE), essays and research papers with the guidance of the teacher over multiple sessions. By going through the stages of the writing process (brainstorming, outlining, writing the rough draft, editing/revising, writing final draft) students will practice getting their ideas on paper and gain confidence in developing arguments in written form. Research Papers Together, we will review credible sources and keywords by looking for research information on a student chosen topic. Students will practice highlighting important information in sources and create a system to organize information (index cards, Quizlet, etc.). Together, we will complete an outline (template provided by the instructor) and edit/revise rough draft. Also, student will practice putting together a works cited page. Class Materials Class materials will be posted in the Outschool classroom. Students working on research papers will also need access to Google classroom. After each class, parents/guardians will be provided with a summary of what was covered and what will be reviewed in the next class. ***Please message me for availability :)
