๐ Step into a Futuristic World & Explore Deep Themes! Reading isnโt just an essential skillโitโs a gateway to new ideas! In this summer book club, middle school students will dive into The Giver by Lois Lowry, a thought-provoking dystopian novel that explores memory, freedom, and the power of choice. Through engaging activities and guided discussions, students will strengthen their reading comprehension, literary analysis, and vocabulary skills while exploring the novelโs powerful themes and moral questions. ๐ What Students Will Learn: Throughout the course, students will: โ Analyze plot events โ Track Jonasโs journey and the challenges he faces โ Describe characters โ Examine Jonas, The Giver, and the roles of the community โ Recognize themes โ Discuss individuality, emotions, control, and choice โ Expand vocabulary โ Define and use key words from the novel โ Support answers with text evidence โ Strengthen comprehension through textual analysis ๐ How the Course Works: ๐ For each reading section, students will receive: โ๏ธ A set of comprehension questions & vocabulary words to complete while reading โ๏ธ Guided discussions on plot, themes, and character development โ๏ธ Interactive activities to reinforce key concepts ๐ Each class session includes: โ๏ธ A review of comprehension questions, vocabulary, plot points, and character analysis โ๏ธ A discussion of important quotes, themes, and literary elements โ๏ธ A fun, interactive Blooket game based on the assigned chapters! ๐ By the end of this course, students will have developed critical thinking skills, improved reading comprehension, and gained a deeper appreciation for dystopian literature.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills by answering questions and participating in discussions.
Students will gain knowledge of new vocabulary words by completing a graphic organizer and participating in discussions.
