Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will read, answer reading comprehension questions and define vocabulary words.
Assessment
Each class students will play Blooket to check reading comprehension. Instructor will reach out if scores are below 70%.

Reading isnโ€™t just an essential skillโ€”itโ€™s a gateway to new ideas! In this summer book club, middle school students will dive into The Giver by Lois Lowry, a thought-provoking dystopian novel that explores memory, freedom, and the power of choice. Through engaging activities and guided discussions, students will strengthen their reading comprehension, literary analysis, and vocabulary skills while exploring the novelโ€™s powerful themes and moral questions.

Throughout the course, students will:
โœ… Analyze plot events โ€“ Track Jonasโ€™s journey and the challenges he faces
โœ… Describe characters โ€“ Examine Jonas, The Giver, and the roles of the community
โœ… Recognize themes โ€“ Discuss individuality, emotions, control, and choice
โœ… Expand vocabulary โ€“ Define and use key words from the novel
โœ… Support answers with text evidence โ€“ Strengthen comprehension through textual analysis

โœ”๏ธ A set of comprehension questions & vocabulary words to complete while reading
โœ”๏ธ Guided discussions on plot, themes, and character development
โœ”๏ธ Interactive activities to reinforce key concepts

๐Ÿ“Œ Each class session includes:
โœ”๏ธ A review of comprehension questions, vocabulary, plot points, and character analysis
โœ”๏ธ A discussion of important quotes, themes, and literary elements
โœ”๏ธ A fun, interactive Blooket game based on the assigned chapters!

๐Ÿ“– By the end of this course, students will have developed critical thinking skills, improved reading comprehension, and gained a deeper appreciation for dystopian literature.

Students will improve their reading comprehension skills by answering questions and participating in discussions.
