Writing Tutoring: Writing for When You Get Stuck

Getting stuck on a writing assignment is a common issue for learners. Working with a writing tutor can help identify where a learner is having difficulty. Discussing a writing assignment with a tutor can help learners create a plan for what they need to write. 

In this 1 on 1 session, I will identify what skill or part of an assignment the learner needs to work on to gain an understanding of what is causing them to get stuck on their writing. Then I will create a step by step learning plan to accomplish the learner's goals (associated with getting stuck on their writing) for the session. 

Students will learn how to write when they get stuck on a writing assignment. Strategies will be used to teach students what to do when they don't know where to start or write next. Students will be asked about what they need to write. 

 Anything writing related that the learner needs to work on, including the writing process will be covered in the session. For academic writing that includes essays, grammar, sentence structure, and works cited. And for creative writing that includes short stories, poetry, and revision. I will briefly review with the learner the writing process. Then I will incorporate this process into using it to encourage them to write independently.

My teaching method is influenced by the Socratic Method. I use the Socratic Method to identify what is causing the main issue the learner is having with their written work. I find asking the learner questions is key to understanding the best way to help them in a way that meets their needs. 

It is encouraged that students bring a writing assignment or something they have written that they are having difficulty with to the session. Interaction between the learner and tutor will take place throughout the entire session.
