Class Experience

This one-time class teaching synonyms and antonyms, along with homonyms, homophones, and homographs will have your learner excited about finding and identifying different words to use in their vocabulary. Your learner will be engaged through interactive slides, class discussion, and individual practice. I like to make sure my students are involved in their own learning process through interaction with me and each other through discussion of what they were just presented with from interactive slides. Once your learner has retained the concept presented, there will be slides that have matching worksheets for your learner to individually work on in class. These worksheets will be provided to be printed before the start of class, and we will work on them as a group activity during class. This hands on method will also reinforce what they learned. Although this class focuses on vocabulary words ranging from the end of kindergarten to the end of second grade, it is a great class for advanced kindergaten students and third graders who may need some review in the topic before moving on to the next level of this class.

Learning Goals

Students will learn or improve their understanding of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, homophones, and homographs. The word choice activities to be covered in this class will give learners the confidence to recognize and use more than the words they are familiar with in their vocabulary, writing, and speech. At the end of class, learners will understand, recognize, and identify the similarities and differences between the word types.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Although I have spent nearly 10 years teaching at the university level with my Master's degree in English and Education, I have enjoyed keeping connected with different students from elementary age through graduate level students tutoring phonics, reading, grammar, writing, research, and math. I truly believe that as a teacher, my role is never ending because it is what I live; every moment of every day is a learning opportunity for all.
Elementary aged students need hands on activities to creatively feed their curiosity. Students are assessed based on mastery of coursework, willingness to be engaged showing they feel safe to ask questions, and the effort they show using their critical thinking skills. As my student age group changes to middle and secondary students, my philosophy is the same even though it grows in delivery. I make sure my students are engaged in thought provoking activities to allow them to use critical thinking skills in the real world by knowing their values and assessing situations in their community in order to solve problems effectively. Although standardized testing may be a required tool for assessment, I also assess this group of students on their initiative to show leadership skills in the classroom that they will be able to share in their community.
I am always committed to making sure all my students are engaged in the material and comfortable with independently using that knowledge in different subject areas as well as their daily lives. Although I have a general teaching philosophy for each group of students, I always keep in mind that students are individuals who are unique and may have specific educational needs that I will need to tailor my approach to.
Sometimes my daughters ask if I can ever go through a day without teaching someone something, and I have to laugh. It isn't something I can stop because it's just who I am. Even though my official field is English, I have tutored in math and because I love to teach, I have also turned my hobby into a teaching opportunity. I currently teach classes for handmade creating greeting cards and memory books as well as sewing projects.
