Class Experience

Did you know that the Commonwealth is home to 2.4 billion people? That it is the second largest intergovernmental organisation by population only behind the United Nations? In this one time class students will get an introductory overview of the Commonwealth of Nations. We will cover why it was created, who the members are, how decisions are made, and what some of the benefits and drawbacks to membership are. We will cover the role of Queen Elizabeth II as head of the Commonwealth.
By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
-give a simple definition of what the Commonwealth is
-give a reason why it was created
-state who the head of the Commonwealth is and why
-give a reason why a country might decide to join the Commonwealth
-give a reason why a country might decide to leave or not join the Commonwealth

I will be using a slide presentation with visuals and short video clips to teach the class. Students will be encouraged to participate through discussion and encouraged to develop their own opinion on the Commonwealth. After class, students will be given the chance to take an optional quiz on the material covered (see below).

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching and discussing international relations, foreign countries, systems of government, and politics. I have a Masters Degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Schiller International University and a Bachelors Degree with a major in Government from Cornell University. I am also TEFL certified.

I teach classes around the topics of International Relations, Comparative Government, Global Studies, Current Affairs and English as a Second/Foreign Language .

I have previously taught in a classroom setting for three years; one year teaching English as a Foreign Language to children ages 4-14 in South Korea, and two years teaching English and Math to teenagers in a Further Education College in England. I have been home-schooling my own four children (ages 5-15) for the past 10 years. I also teach English as a foreign language to children 4-14 years old online.

Over the years I have lived in 5 countries and have travelled to another 17. I am American, but I have been living in the UK for the last 16 years... I haven't lost my American accent but if your children are American they may pick up on the fact that I sometimes will say English words (like "rubbish" instead of "garbage"). I live by the sea with my husband, children and two cats.

My classes will feel more like a seminar than lecture. I will talk the minimum required to convey the topic we are learning in order to include time for discussion and questions. My aim in every class is to get the students to use critical thinking skills to evaluate the topic themselves. If a student is uncomfortable with voicing their opinion, that's of course absolutely fine, they can still be thinking about the questions being discussed (and they are more than welcome to send me a message afterwards with any comments or questions that they didn't feel comfortable sharing in class).

Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss any particular needs your child has; I will always do my best to accommodate any particular need (I have a child with additional needs so I understand some of the challenges).

As a parent who is paying for some tutoring for my own children, it's really important to me to offer value for money for my classes and that the parent and student are happy with the class outcome.

Thanks for taking the time to consider one of my classes and I look forward to meeting your learner in class!
