Class Experience

In this week-long songwriting course, we will go over the elements of creating a song.

Our goal will be to use the ideas discussed during the week to create original songs individually and with the group!

We will discuss:

Musical Styles
Melody, Harmony, and Lyrics

Keeping an Inspiration Journal for Lyrics
Finding Your Style and Your Voice

Scales— Major and Minor and how to use chords to set the mood in a song

Song Form — Verses, Choruses, Bridges, Intros and Outros
How to Write Verses and Choruses
Jingles and "Ear-worms"-- Why Do Some Songs Get Stuck In Your Head?

Each day of camp will consist of a "lecture style" lesson in which all students will be on mute. I will unmute at the end of each topic to ask focus questions and any other questions.

We will spend time each day working on our own original song. Students are required to spend at least 20 minutes of additional time each day to complete their songwriting project.
Learning Goals
Students will leave the camp with an understanding of harmony, melody, and lyric, as well as being able to recognize song form.

Students will have created an inspiration journal to keep ideas in, and will begin to have a deeper understanding of their own personal musical style and taste.

Students will be encouraged to continue finding inspiration and writing songs as well as continue with suggested listening of songwriters.
