US Grade 3
Reading fluency is the ability to read quickly, and with expression. Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Fluency is also very important for motivation! I love watching children learn to love reading! In this tutoring session, we will read a passage together (choral reading). Next, the students will read the passage out loud to me. Students will read it (for 1 minute) as I mark off words that are not read correctly. We will then calculate their WWR (whole words read). We will discuss new vocabulary from the passage. Last, we will answer comprehension questions about the passage. By the end of third grade students should be able to read 110-120 words per minute. Each passage will be uploaded 2 days before class so that you have time to print the passage out. If you do not have a printer, I will screen share the passage. This is an ongoing class, and there will be several "themed" reading passages. Week of March 1- Reading Day Week of March 6- Helen Keller Week of March 13- St. Patrick's Day Week of March 20- World Water Day Week of March 27- Sandra Day O'Connor.
Learning Goals
Students will grow in their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary by practicing reading and comprehension in a small-group setting.
