Hi families! I'm Joel, and I'm thrilled to bring my passion for music and years of experience to your learners!

Music has been my life's focus. I hold degrees in both Choral and Instrumental Music Education, as well as a Master's Degree in Voice Performance, from Bowling Green State University. My master's thesis even explored the fascinating world of small-scale opera! This deep academic background provides me with a comprehensive understanding of music across many genres and styles.

For nearly three decades, I've been dedicated to music education. I served as Choir Director for Celina City Schools for nine years (2015-2024), guiding students of all ages in choral music, classes in Melodica, Piano, Guitar, History of American Popular Music, Survey of Music History, and Exploration of Musical Theater. Prior to that, I taught 7th-12th grade band, choir, and general music at Preble Shawnee Local Schools (2011-2013).

Since stepping out of public education, I'm now fully focused on providing exceptional private music instruction through studioJT-LLC, where I've accumulated 16 years of experience working with students one-on-one, both online and in person.

My experience extends beyond the classroom and into the professional performance world. I've performed as a bass section leader with the Toledo Opera in productions like Tosca, Aida, and Faust. I've also sung leading roles in operas such as The Magic Flute and L'elisir d'amore, and performed as a soloist in major choral works like Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Handel's Messiah. In fact, I led and conducted nine annual performances of Handel's Messiah with the Celina High School choral department and community members. I've had the privilege of sharing the stage with world-class artists and have seen many of my talented friends achieve success on Broadway, in opera houses, and in music education across the country.

For me, teaching is about empowering students to grow musically with joy and confidence. I believe in creating a supportive and inclusive learning space where students feel comfortable exploring their voices and musical abilities. My approach emphasizes personalized growth and improving practice techniques, rather than relying on gimmicks. I draw upon best practices from across vocal and instrumental disciplines to create a truly unique and effective learning experience.

I offer lessons in voice, piano, and low brass instruments, and can coach students in a wide range of styles, including opera, musical theater, and jazz. I also provide talent coaching for public speaking and vocal clarity. My areas of expertise include music history, diction for singers (foreign language coaching), music theory, composition/songwriting, and choral arranging.

I live in Ohio with my wife Emily and our 4 dogs and 8 aquariums.
