1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, learners will experience the scientific method in daily life by conducting their own fun (and yummy) experiments. We will discuss the steps in the scientific method and the process of each step. Although this class is supported by slides in Nearpod, it will be mostly hands on doing experiments. Learners will develop a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, make observations and analyze our data, and draw conclusions for three different questions/experiments. We will conduct experiments to draw conclusions about the following: 1. What color appears most in a small bag of M&M's? What about a small bag of Skittles? 2. How long does it take M&M's to dissolve in warm water? 3. Which side of a penny can hold the most water? Each learner will conduct independent experiments during class and we will report our findings with each other to draw our conclusion. Learners will need the following to complete this class: 1 small bag of M&M's (unopened- they are free to eat these after we are done with the experiments) 1 small bag of Skittles (unopened- they are free to eat these after we are done with the experiments) 1 penny 1 small dropper such as an unused medicine dropper (you can usually pick these up at a pharmacy and they are great to keep on hand even after this class) Small bowl of warm water (parents may have to assist with the warm water tap for younger children) Paper towels for clean up in case spills occur Please make sure your learner understands to keep the water away from the computer or device used for the class. This is a very laid back class and is meant to be a fun introduction to the scientific method. I am looking forward to a fun class!
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to define the scientific method and explain the steps by doing several science experiments in class.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parents do not have to individually log on to Nearpod. I can share my screen so that younger learners do not have difficulty. I will also share my screen for any required Youtube videos.
Supply List
Please refer to the class description for the necessary supplies for the experiments.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of West Georgia
As a geologist, I have used the scientific method for a number of experiments and research topics. As a field geologist who has relevant job experience, I have used it to to make critical decisions on real life scenarios.
