In this program, we will explore the science behind shark tagging. Students will have an opportunity to examine different types of tags and learn the technology behind how they work. We will learn scientific tagging techniques including where and how to place a tag with a life-size model. We will also discuss the benefits of tracking a shark’s movement, and more!
Learning Goals
Students will learn the technology behind several different types of shark tags and discover how they help scientists collect data.
We will discuss shark anatomy, and fun shark behaviors like migration patterns! This is a real world virtual lab!

Learning Needs
The instructor is a licensed board-certified behavior analyst with extensive experience providing therapy and writing curricula for neurodiverse learners. She possesses experience in trauma-informed care and ACT therapy.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Dr. Heather Blackall holds a PhD in Biochemistry, as well as advanced degrees in pharmaceutical sciences, and veterinary medicine with an emphasis on forensic toxicology. She is nationally certified as a toxicological chemist, and possesses multiple state licenses in clinical chemistry. She currently serves as an environmental writer and wildlife conservation consultant for a variety of global entities.
She has experience with shark research, diving, and tagging. She has been a presenter at SharkCon for the past several years, and has delivered educational programs globally.
