This program will explore bioluminescence and biofluorescence within shark species. From a biological perspective, we will learn anatomical adaptations that equip sharks to act like undersea glow sticks. We will dive into a discussion on animal behavior and hypothesize behavioral reasons for lighting up the depths of the ocean. This program teaches on physics of light absorption and generation as we learn about a whole other category of waves beneath the ocean surface! Learners will have the opportunity to participate in a chemistry experiment, engage in discussions that promote analytical thinking, observe biofacts, and interact during a PowerPoint. Model sharks will also be featured in this highly immersive class.
Learning Goals
Students can expect to learn about the biology and anatomy of deep sea sharks including special light organs and hormones. We will study shark communication strategies and behaviors. The physics of light absorption as well as the concepts of biofluorescence and bioluminescence will also be discussed.
