Humans have used various substances to alter and enhance their appearance for over 10,000 years. Today, the cosmetic industry is over $500 BILLION (USD) per year. In this class, you'll learn about different components of cosmetics, some of the compounds that are used to produce color, and how some of the products are made. By the end of class, students will be able to: - describe the purpose and history of cosmetics - identify the role of each key ingredient in cosmetics (water, emulsifiers, emollients, thickeners, pigments) - state what kinds of compounds are used to provide color and shimmer to cosmetics This class will be a combination of lecture and teacher-led class discussion. An optional quiz will be provided to assess student learning. No background knowledge is required to take this class- just a desire to learn!

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with 6.5 years of experience in the classroom. I have also taught freshman college chemistry. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest and motivation- from high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions.
