Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
What elements are in my iPad? Why do leaves change color in the fall? What makes lemons taste sour? Where do the colors come from in paint? If any of these are questions that sound interesting to you, then you would probably enjoy being an element detective!

Each week, we will start class by doing an introduction to that week's overall element theme or question. We'll discuss what students already know about the topic of the week before taking a deep dive into that week's topic. At the end of class, each student will get to share what they thought was most interesting for the week as well as answer some questions to review what they've learned.

This is the perfect class for anyone who always wonders "why?" and "how?"

List of Topics:

Week of December 11- How do candles work?
NO CLASS FROM WEEK OF DEC 18 THROUGH WEEK OF JAN 29
Week of January 29- The chemistry of cats

Students are welcome to join the class at any point- we will cover a new topic each week and no prior knowledge is required- just a desire to learn more about the chemistry of the world around us!

Students will get a handout each week as a review and extension of information we learned in class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Science
I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with over two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and five years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
