What are flexagons? Flexagons are a flat model, usually made of paper, that can be "flexed" to reveal sides beyond the top and bottom. Designing and making hexaflexagons involves creative problem-solving -- and as a bonus, flexagons make amazing fidgets! In this workshop we will learn a little about the history and nomenclature of the hexaflexagon and learn how to make both a trihexaflexagon and a hexahexaflexagon. We will also explore and deconstruct hexaflexagons to figure out how they work. I will also teach learners how to make a hexaflexagon with no printed pattern. Week 1: History and Nomenclature of the Hexaflexagon; Making a Trihexaflexagon Week 2: Pre-Coloring and Folding a Hexahexaflexagon Week 3: Hexahexaflexagon Planning, Structure and Design Week 4: Hexaflexagons in the Wild (i.e.: making a hexaflexagon with no printed pattern -- great for creating a quick fidget!) Each week, learners will be producing at least one hexaflexagon which they will show in the Outschool classroom. Learners will upload a photo or video of their hexaflexagon and discuss their inspiration and challenges in its creation and design. In addition to interacting directly with me in the classroom, learners will be encouraged to ask each other questions and solicit feedback from each other in the Outschool classroom.
