Class Experience

Intermediate - Advanced Level
Looking back through a travel sketchbook has always been one of my biggest joys! Knowing that I spent time to sit down and create art in a place that I enjoyed is another way to happily look back on memories from adventures.

In this class, we will meet weekly to create our own travel sketchbooks and learn about techniques to quickly and accurately draw from life (or an image) and bring landscapes and architecture to life. Sadly, we are unable to get up and easily travel to these locations once a week, but we will be using images from various travels to work from.

The images that we are working from typically will be of architecture, though we will not be focusing on typical landmarks, ie. Eiffel Tower, The Vatican, Big Ben Clock Tower, etc. but of city streets and quiet locations. The areas that you would typically be able to find a park bench and work on a drawing for a little while.

For the first 30 minutes of class, we will learn briefly about the location/ city and then do a basic sketch using perspective drawing techniques. For the last half of the class, we will be correcting our drawings, adding details and mark making, and if we have time we will also be adding watercolor.

Some weeks we may walk away with a completed drawing, but it is important to remember that when doing quick travel sketches, it is not always necessary to "finish" a drawing but to get the most important information down on paper and small details you want to remember.

If students request it, I will leave the image we worked from in the classroom for them to access later for themselves.

Hello,
My name is Ms. Elizabeth Suriani, and I am a full-time artist from Northern Colorado. I graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a minor in Art History in 2016. While at the University of Wyoming I primarily studied 2D art style, including oil painting and print making. I also studied in Florence, Italy during the fall of 2015 where I studied architectural and figurative drawing, as well as fresco restoration.

Since 2015 I have been teaching art and art history to students ranging from ages 5-17 years old with lessons ranging from basic instructions, all the way to advanced classes and color theory for older students. I love teaching art and am currently teaching two international students in Italy and Thailand.

I have recently returned home from teaching English as a second language in Bangkok, Thailand with students aging from 2-16 years old. I loved working with my students and miss them dearly.
On top of being a full-time artist, I have also started my own jewelry business, as well as teaching English Language to children in China!

When teaching, I love to keep things fun and light. I believe that seriousness doesn’t do a young mind any good when learning art at an early age, it tends to discourage them instead. I want to help my students find art or anything they are passionate about and feel like they have a space to ask questions, experiment, and flourish.
I can’t wait to see you in class!
