Class Experience

By popular demand, Taylor Swift! The following songs were chosen according to their availability as Spanish covers performed by Kevin, Karla y La Banda. This class assumes no Spanish background and strong familiarity with the English lyrics.

1. "Muévete"/"Shake it Off"

2. "Siempre Supe Desde Que Te Conocí Que Un Problema Eras"/"I Knew You Were Trouble"

Broad pronunciation and grammar rules will be reviewed. Common vocabulary (nouns, verbs, adjectives) will be introduced. These will include words that may be completely unfamiliar and several cognates (words that are spelled similarly in English and Spanish). Students will compare the two sets of lyrics. They will discuss why differences have to occur between the adaptation and the English translation (rhyming, length of words). They will practice pronunciation of the sentences including the words and the chorus. Students will watch the adaptation video (containing the lyrics and the audio only) via YouTube. After 1 short (<5 minute) break to stretch/converse/snack/ask questions, students will then transition to the next song.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Born in Lima, Peru. American through and through! I will be forever grateful to my parents for agreeing to raise me in a bilingual manner! My training includes teaching certification from the State of Connecticut and a master's degree in speech-language pathology. I have worked for a local school district for 5 years continuously, and for two different states for the past two year online. I have also had the privilege of teaching English on an individual basis online for a total of two years. Currently I work in the schools and am home due to the temporary shutdown.

I wholeheartedly believe that teaching individually or small groups is my calling! My main interest in teaching is identifying a student's strengths and assisting with goal-setting. "One small step" for one person may be "one giant leap" for someone else! (Thanks Neil Armstrong!)

My interests are wide but in general my preference would be to make classes designed for small group discussion. I have worked with many bilingual children on an individual basis, and have conducted research in language acquisition. Through my work as an online ESL teacher I have I found a deep appreciation for taking a student's strengths and interests and using this background knowledge to help them feel more comfortable embarking on new adventures. I also have found considerable flexibility in my job experience in that I could pick and choose from a variety of curriculum offerings to suit the needs of my students rather than the opposite approach. I have worked closely with special education teachers to ensure that all children in the classroom environment had the means to access the curriculum.

I have been with Outschool for 2.5 years now (I signed up long ago but technically have only started teaching as of December 13, 2017). Please feel free to send me questions or comments on anything. It's really broadened my horizons to be here and learn from all your children!
