Class Experience

Let's go under the sea! In this four day camp, students will get moving to four different songs from the original and the 2023 The Little Mermaid! Come with some dance experience or none at all; this camp is designed to get you dancing AND have fun!

We will begin each class with a brief check in to see what kind of energy everyone is bringing with them, then a brief warm up to wake up our bodies and feel out the space, and then move on to learning a beginner dance combination set to about a minute of a song from the movie. Dance steps may include jazz squares, kick ball changes, windmill arms, pivots, step touches, grapevines, and many more.

We will take a short break at the halfway point of each class to hydrate and take a restroom break, as well as have discussions about the movie (why certain characters made certain decisions, who is the best character, etc.) In the last few minutes of each class, we will have a final performance of the dance of the day (anyone at home is welcome to watch if the student wishes!). Students can also have a Little Mermaid style costume accessible for our final performance! At the end of each class students will also share one word or sound to describe how they felt about their performance.

On the last day of class, we will have our typical final performance and then a share where each student will show which dance move was their favorite to learn and do, and one thing they were proud they did during our time together.

*Please note that we dance to a small portion of one song, not in a formal concert or performance format, using my own choreography not featured in the movies. We never do all of the songs within one class, only one each class, and never in the context of the show or using the technical elements related to The Little Mermaid.
Learning Goals
By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They will also develop their confidence in performing in front of others and using their body in a new athletic way. They might also learn a new song!

Parental Guidance
Students should be in a space where they have room to move (seated with headphones is not advisable for this class!). Students should also wear sensible footwear (no open toe shoes or heels). Barefoot or socked feet are welcome! Please also have water, juice, lemonade, or some type of liquid nearby to stay hydrated throughout class (soda would not be the best choice to stay hydrated!).

The following is OPTIONAL: If the student chooses, they may have costume pieces that are in the style of The Little Mermaid to put on for our final performance in the last five minutes of class. Please note the teacher will not appear in costume to make everyone feel comfortable, and remind everyone that you don't have to have a costume to have a good time!

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms!
