Description
Class Experience
Students will leave this class with a working idea of how to make a simple storyboard for their film or project. Topics covered will be the basics of setting up a story for film, how to create a storyboard, and how to storyboard and shoot using the "Rule of Thirds." A storyboard template and camera shot example sheet will be provided for student use.
I have served as middle/upper school theatre educator for 30+ years. In addition to teaching acting, design, and drama, I also teach creative filmmaking. Every year my eighth grade students develop plot lines, write screenplays, learn/execute various shots and angles, storyboard, shoot, and edit their film shorts. A film festival is held at the end of spring semester to showcase these original shorts.
Homework to be completed before the second and final class: Create a simple story with characters, setting, conflict, and a plot. Plan how to tell this simple story in 12 -or less- storyboard squares. Each square will be a camera shot. This work will be the starting point for class two.
Students will be provided a storyboarding template and a camera shot example sheet. These sheets will be posted on the class page 24 hours before the class is scheduled to begin. Students will also need a smart phone to use as camera.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
