Beginner Level
Join us for an exciting hands-on STEM adventure! In this class, students (ages 6-12) will explore the fascinating world of science, technology, engineering, and math through creative projects and challenges. Each week, we’ll build and experiment with fun activities such as designing paper rockets, engineering catapults, and exploring plant growth. Students will develop important STEM skills like problem-solving, experimentation, and creative thinking. Every activity is designed to encourage active participation and ignite curiosity about how things work in the world around them. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of projects and a deeper understanding of key STEM concepts, all while having fun! This class is perfect for young learners who love to build, explore, and discover new things!
Learning Goals
Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by completing hands-on STEM challenges.
Students will explore foundational science, technology, engineering, and math concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Syllabus
8 Lessons
over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
Week 1: Engineering Challenge – Egg Drop
Objective: Explore the concepts of impact and design.
Activity: Design and build a protective casing for an egg to survive a fall from a height. Students will test their designs by dropping the eggs and adjusting based on results.
Lesson 2:
Week 2: Engineering Challenge – Build a Catapult
Objective: Learn about force, motion, and simple machines.
Activity: Use popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and a spoon to create a small catapult. Test how far objects can be launched and adjust the design to improve performance.
Lesson 3:
Week 3: Engineering Challenge - Build a Paper Rocket
Objective: Explore basic principles of aerodynamics, force, and motion.
Activity: Build a paper rocket using construction paper, tape, and a straw. Launch the rocket and experiment with modifications to improve its flight.
Lesson 4:
Week 4: Math and Measurement – Marshmallow Bridge
Objective: Explore measurement and problem-solving by building structures.
Activity: Create a bridge with toothpicks and marshmallows, then test its strength.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Mercer University
I am a degreed teacher with over twenty years of experience teaching a wide range of subjects including High School Biology, where I developed a deep understanding of scientific concepts and cultivated a passion for teaching students how to explore and think critically about the world around them. My approach to teaching STEM focuses on hands-on learning and fostering a growth mindset, encouraging students to engage with materials and experiment in a fun, creative way.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked with students of all ages, from early elementary to high school, helping them build confidence in their ability to solve problems and think independently. My lessons are designed to make complex topics accessible and exciting, allowing students to learn through active participation and exploration.
I am excited to share my experience and enthusiasm for STEM with your child and help them discover the joy of learning through interactive and engaging activities.
