Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Unlock the secrets hidden in your spice rack with "The Science of Spice," an engaging and self paced class designed for curious minds aged 7-12. Each week, we dive into the fascinating world of spices, focusing on one spice per class to uncover its history, chemistry, and culinary magic.

In this series, we’ll explore spices like Ajwain, Mace, Nutmeg and Cloves. Students will learn how these spices have traveled the globe, influenced cultures, and played a crucial role in cuisine. We’ll break down the science that makes each spice unique, from the compounds that create their distinct flavors to their potential health benefits.

Through hands-on experiments, sensory experiences, and at-home cooking students will gain a deeper understanding of the spices they use every day. Each class includes practical tips on how to use the featured spice in cooking, along with easy recipes to try at home. Whether your child is a budding chef, a science enthusiast, or simply loves to learn, this class is for them!

What to Expect:
Engaging Lessons: Each session focuses on one spice, blending history, science, and culinary exploration.
Interactive Experiments: Students will conduct simple, safe experiments to understand the sensory and chemical properties of each spice.
Culinary Tips: Discover how to incorporate each spice into your cooking, with easy recipes and practical demonstrations.
Discussion & Q&A: Students will share their thoughts, ask questions, and discuss their experiences with the class in the chat between classes.

Learners will need the spice of the week + a mortar and pestle for experiments.

Note: Recipes will be shared at the end of each class so families can gather supplies and incorporate one or more meals into their own meal plans. We encourage students to gather spices a few weeks in advance, especially for those hard-to-find spices that may need to be ordered online.

Learning Goals

Understand the historical and cultural significance of various spices.
