Class Experience

In this interactive and hands-on Level 2 class we will code four new video games!

In the first session, we will review the basics of coding (i.e. terminology and navigation of Scratch). This session will add to the skills we learned in Scratching the Surface of Coding.

In the following sessions, students will learn how to:

-Code their arrow keys for simpler video game play! Alternatively, students can code WASD as many of their favorite computer-based games use WASD as navigation controls.

-Create a Jumping Video Game building on the drawing skills we learned in Scratching the Surface of Coding! Do you love Crossy Road?! Than this class is for you!

-Expand their knowledge of variables as we code both scores and timers in this level!

This game is ALL about creating fun games to play. Students will gain the confidence in coding to create countless other video games on Scratch. Most importantly we will have fun learning something new and challenging our brains!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coding is an important subject for your students to learn for many reasons including:

-Coding helps us understand technology! Technology is an integral part of our daily lives! Learning to code helps your students understand why and how the technology works.
-Coding encourages creativity! Through coding, children learn through mistakes, and creativity is encouraged!
-Coding develops math skills! Coding is abstract and lets students apply math to real-life situations. Coding makes math fun!
-Coding helps students plan and organize thoughts! This will help their academic writing also!
-Coding encourages students to be problem solvers! In coding, there is not always ONE WAY to do something! Coding allows students to find a solution to their mistakes, and improve upon what they have already done!

Learning Goals

By the end of the four sessions, students will have coded 4 interactive video games!
