Kickstart young learners’ passion for programming with this project-based Scratch course! Design games and solve unique problems using Scratch, a block-based coding environment created by MIT. Students will create games that they can play and share with friends and family. All lessons are project-based, with 8 fun guided projects that allow students to practice new programming concepts. All students will be asked to apply what they’ve learned to create a final project of their own design which will be presented on the last day of class. There will be some reinforcement quizzes for students to complete after lessons, along with review games that will be played in the final class meetings to ensure students remember material and are prepared to take the next steps in their programming adventures. Lesson 1 – Rock Band Students will learn how to program a rock band that can play multiple musical instruments depending on either a keyboard press or if a sprite is clicked. Skills learned: ○ How to use Scratch interface, characters, blocks and scripts ○ Detect clicks on sprites ○ Play sounds ○ Use keyboard press events Lesson 2 – Chatbot Students will learn how to program a talking character, called a chat robot or chatbot, to give different responses depending on what they say. Skills learned: ○ Concatenate strings using Scratch operators ○ Use variables to store user input ○ Use conditional selection to respond to user input in Scratch Lesson 3 - Boat Race Students will learn how to create their own maze game where they have to navigate a boat through an obstacle course. This project can be modified to add extra difficulty and obstacles. Skills learned: ○ Use conditional statements to react to key presses ○ Use variables to store a game’s state ○ Use conditional selection based on the value of a variable ○ Use lists to store data Lesson 4 – Dodgeball Students will learn to create a game in which they control a character with the keyboard and must get to the end of a level while dodging balls that are moving towards the character. Skills Learned: ○ Move sprites using keyboard input ○ Clone sprites to make copies of them ○ Use ‘broadcast’ and ‘receive blocks’ to send messages ○ Detect collisions using colors ○ Reset a level once a game over condition is reached Lesson 5 – Monster Hunter Students learn to create a game in which they must quickly click on different monsters that appear on screen in order to capture them and score points. ○ Move a sprite to a random position ○ Understand the need to pauses between actions within loops ○ Use timers to control the flow of a game ○ Add a variable to store a game score in Scratch Lesson 6 – Snowball Fight Students will learn to create a game in which they throw snowballs at targets to score points. Skills learned: ○ Move sprites by following the cursor ○ Use broadcasts between sprites ○ Use multiple loops ○ Update variables depending on the duration of a key press Lesson 7 – Space Invaders Students will learn to create a game in which you have to save the Earth from space aliens. Skills learned: ○ Move sprites using keyboard input ○ Use clones to create many enemies ○ Use sprite costumes to create animations and change depending on game state ○ Display a ‘Game Over’ screen Lesson 8 – Ping Pong Defense Students will learn to create a game in which you have to defend a goal from a ball that bounces around the screen. Skills learned: ○ Move sprites by following the cursor ○ Use multiple loops ○ Make a sprite “bounce” in a random direction ○ Progressively increase the difficulty of a game Lesson 9 - Review and Final Project Workshop Students play live competitive review games to reinforce all concepts taught. Class time is dedicated to helping students while they work on final projects and answering any questions they have. Lesson 10 - Final Project Presentations Students demonstrate what they’ve learned by sharing their creation with the class. They can get feedback from peers and the instructor, and get suggestions on how to make the project even better.
Learning Goals
In this online live course, students will learn how to create Scratch programs, make games and solve programming problems, build a complete understanding of Scratch 3.0, understand all the fundamental programming principles, understand complex programming topics, and use Scratch to develop games!
