What's included

Class Experience

Chemistry is one of the pillars of middle school science. In this course, your student will be introduced to chemistry through a mix of hands-on experience with classic classroom preparation.

We will break apart each concept, look at the parts, and then put them together to see the whole picture. There will be drawings, hands-on activities, and opportunities to practice concepts for better understanding.

Week 1 - The Atom - Subatomic Particles (proton, neutron, and electron)
In week 1, we will start with the basic building block of matter, an atom! We use different atom models, identify subatomic particles and their charges, and understand how to draw or model atoms of specific elements.

- Recorded Lesson
- Practice Worksheet
- Share our atomic models with classmates (optional)
- Interactive Simulation
- Discussion Questions

Week 2 - Atoms, Elements, and Compounds
In week 2, we will discuss chemical versus physical combinations, pure substances, how elements combine to make new substances (compounds), and the basics of bonding (covalent and ionic bonding).

- Recorded Lesson
- Practice Drawings/Worksheet (follow along with the video)
- Discussion Questions

Week 3 - Reading the Periodic Table of Elements
In week 3, we will discuss basic vocabulary associated with the periodic table of elements, such as atomic number, atomic mass, and chemical symbol. We will also practice calculating the number of protons and neutrons in a specific element, then discuss groups and trends in the periodic table.

- Recorded Lesson
- Coloring and Labeling the Periodic Table of Elements
- Classroom virtual Scavenger Hunt using the Periodic Table of Elements
- Answers are posted at the end of the week

Week 4 - Density and Other Physical Properties - How to Identify an Unknown Substance
In week 4, we will practice identifying elements using their physical and chemical properties, such as density. We will spend more time on density, what it is, how to calculate it, and how to use it to identify elements and compounds.

- Recorded Lesson
- Mystery Element Worksheet
- Answers are posted at the end of the week

Week 5 - The Law of Conservation of Mass and Balancing Equations (Basic)
In week 5, we will discuss chemical equations, the law of conservation of mass, and how to balance simple equations. Your student will need a manipulative such as candy (skittles, m&ms, or multicolor candy) or beads for this activity.

- Recorded Lesson
- Video: The Law of Conservation of Mass
- Interactive Simulation
- Practice Problem Worksheet and Recorded Video
- Digital Game to Check for Understanding

Learning Goals

At the end of this course, your student will be able to:
- Create models/drawings to represent the arrangement and charges of subatomic particles in an atom
(protons, neutrons, and electrons).
- Distinguish between atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds.
- Use atomic mass, atomic number, and symbol to determine the placement of an element on the Periodic Table.
- Investigate the property of density and provide evidence that properties like density
do not change for a pure substance.
- Balance chemical equations to show how the total number of atoms for each element
does not change in chemical reactions, and as a result, mass is always conserved in a closed
system. (Law of Conservation of Mass.)

Supply List
Weekly assignments and videos will be added each week.

Optional: Paper, colored pencils, markers, or pens for notes.
*For weeks 1, 2, and 5, it would be helpful to have some objects to manipulate (example: candy such as skittles or M&Ms or colored beads).
*I will upload a periodic table each student can print and use, or they can bring their own.

My approach to teaching is all about making science relatable, exciting, and empowering for students. I focus not just on the facts but on teaching them how to think like scientists, solve problems, and use scientific language effectively. This builds their confidence and helps them see science as a skill they can master, opening doors to further exploration and advanced studies.

Whether you're looking for ongoing classes, one-time sessions, or semester-long courses, I offer a range of options to suit your needs. I'm also available for personalized tutoring and test preparation. If you are still looking for a time or topic that fits your schedule, feel free to reach out, and I'll do my best to accommodate you.

Let's embark on a journey of discovery and learning together! I can't wait to share my love for science with your students. Contact me to discuss how we can make science come alive in a way that's meaningful and fun for them. See you in class!
