Class experience
In this ongoing class, students will learn recorder basics. Each week we will practice posture, holding the instrument properly, breath control, fingering technique, embouchure, etiquette, and basic note reading while playing short exercises and songs. The class is structured for six-year-old learners. It's an entry level class. We will practice different rhythms while we practice the first note, then the second note, and so on. We will also jump, clap, and discuss what we are learning...
Students will learn recorder basics. Each week we will practice sitting tall, holding the instrument properly, breathing deeply, blowing air lightly into the instrument, using our fingers to cover the holes in the instrument, using our mouth to seal the air flow, behaving like an instrumentalist, and basic note reading including rhythm. We can learn all of these things by following directions while playing short exercises and songs.
I have successfully taught very young learners to play recorder previously in a large-class format. The small-class format is much more conducive to learning and making progress when it comes to very young learners. The only concern is finger size compared to the holes in the bore of the recorder. Please check to make sure that your student's fingers are able to cover the holes.
Learners must possess a recorder. It can be either Baroque or German in style. The Yamaha company has some good information which will be shared in the Outschool classroom, but the type will not make a difference to early beginners. Parents of learners can access printouts and teacher-created videos for practice weekly in the Outschool classroom.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There is no sensitive or mature content in this class.
