You will be learning 9 initial songs and some extras for those of you that like a challenge! Each song earns a belt. White, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, red, brown and black. There are will be an additional 6 belts that you can earn after that! You will earn a double black belt for these additional six! All students will start out on the white belt. Every class will begin with a 30 minute group learning session where all students will learn notation, note reading and rhythms to all of the songs. Once students start advancing to different leveled songs at different times, each student will be put into a breakout session according to which song they are working on. They may work on the song together for 10 minute increments where they will then be automatically sent back to the regular classroom and re-join the teacher. Students will listen and support others as they play to earn their belt. Instructions on how this classroom will be conducted, will be made clear to all students when joining. Rules to be aware of: 1. Be kind and respectful to others 2. Only play your instrument when you are asked to 3. Students will have to work in groups: When playing in breakout sessions, be kind and considerate to the leader in your group. The leader in the group is the student that knows the song the best. During this 10 minute breakout session, each student should have a chance to practice. It is solely up to the teacher to determine if there should be more time allotted for breakout sessions during class time. 4. The remaining time will be to determine if a student is going to advance to the next belt which means there will be time where others will have to listen and wait quietly. This is what the teacher likes to call (all of the students that are not playing) the audience. Practicing good audience behavior is also part of being in this class. 5. Please have fun and remember that practice makes better!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to recognize notes and rests, read notes on staff, learn procedures involving the recorder and how to play it.

Supply List
You will need to buy a recorder if you do not already have one. You can go to www.westmusic.com. They have Harmony recorders starting at $2.40 each. They are a good recorder. I will be sending the songs as needed via computer and you may print them out if you wish to. The only place that I would like for that purchase NOT be at is a dollar store only because they do not have the same pitch as other recorders and creates a not so pleasing sound. PLEASE DO sign up for the class even if you do not have your recorder yet as long as you have it by class number two or at the latest class number three. Your child will still be able to participate in the learning of the note reading and rhythms and finger placing even without the recorder.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Ms. Covil and I teach music K-5. I have been teaching for 15 years. I am certified to teach music K-12, but I include reading, math, social studies, history and other subjects within my music lessons.
I would like to tell you about my values and philosophies behind my teaching. I value all students and I take pride in making my music classes "hands on" fun. Don't be surprised if you end up learning about fractions or phonics during my lessons! I am going to provide as many ways as I can to help you out with concepts that you may be struggling with in your regular classroom.
Another thing you must know about me in my classroom, is that I have a friend Felipe who helps me out from time to time. You will meet him in my video (if he behaves himself!).
I look forward to meeting you and I hope to see you soon. Enjoy my video!
