✅ Activate! ✅ Ask! ✅ Answer! Good readers ask questions while reading and make inferences to answer their questions. In this course, we will focus on the “Activate ~ Ask ~ Answer” strategy: 1️⃣ Activate Prior Knowledge: think about what you already know (your schema) 2️⃣ Ask Questions: while reading, pause and ask questions like “What has me confused or curious?” 3️⃣ Answer with Inferences: make inferences to answer your question(s) In this course, your learner will learn 2 critical reading comprehension skills: Asking Questions and Making Inferences. Questioning and Making Inferences are reading strategies that are taught to students to help them engage with the text. Both inferring and questioning techniques push students to think beyond the literal, text-based answers they might be used to giving, and force students to think in deeper ways about the text. Using questioning and inferring techniques help students to make more personal connections with a text, as well as increase their ability to think critically and analytically about text. In this class, we will discuss Questioning and Inferring and practice each skill during the class. Students will learn what it means to ask questions and make inferences, the different sentence starters they can use for each skill, how to use clues and their own schema to develop each skill, and MORE! Some activities include (may vary slightly dependent on class size and time permitted): 📌 Teacher-Led PowerPoint Lesson - My presentation includes direct instruction to present the content as well as fun activities to engage the students. 📌 Questioning & Inference Task Cards 📌 Questioning and Inference Riddles - read the clues to figure out the riddles! 📌Read Aloud - Learners will have opportunities to practice their new skills and engage throughout the reading by sharing reactions, questions, and inferences. Key Student Lesson Goals: ⭐ Know the definition of inference, and will be able to make inferences with clear reasoning. ⭐ Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. ⭐ Use their own experiences to help understand inference. ⭐ Identify relevant details in a text to support their answers. ⭐ Ask good questions is a way for students to monitor their own comprehension while reading. ⭐ Actively ask questions like: Why did they say that? What do they mean by that? I wonder what they were doing there? How did she do that? Why am I reading this? ⭐ Ask both “thick” and “thin” questions while reading: Thin questions are surface-level questions that usually can be answered by looking right in the text. Thick questions, on the other hand, require students to use their own background knowledge to dive deeper. ✏️ A Little About Me: I am a certified elementary school teacher who is eager to help your child with reading and math. ⭐ Hobbies ⭐
In my free time I enjoy reading, looking for shark teeth (I currently have a collection of more than 10,000 teeth!), and photography. I live on Folly Beach and my favorite shots to shoot are of surfers here on the island. Surf photography is a huge passion of mine! I also love my pups, Jessie and Remi. They're both Chocolate Labs. My biggest passion and focus right now is my nonprofit, Project Z of the Lowcountry where we provide beds to children who don't have a bed of their own at home. It feels odd to be out of the classroom but doing Project Z full time has been such a blessing! I hope to connect with you and your family so that I can get a little teaching back in my life. I'll always be a teacher at heart!
